Re:AOPG Gear 5 Luffy Awakening Guide
How to unlock, use, and build around Gear 5 in the Multiverse Sea patch.
Gear 5 is the awakened form of the Gomu Gomu no Mi and the most sought-after transformation in Re:AOPG. It transforms Luffy’s rubber body into a comedic, reality-bending weapon that ignores conventional combat rules. This guide covers every requirement, the full quest chain, the ability kit, and the best builds to maximize Gear 5’s potential.
What Gear 5 Does
Gear 5 is not a simple damage multiplier. It fundamentally changes how Luffy fights:
- Rubber inflation — Attacks stretch, bounce, and ignore terrain. Enemies are ragdolled by rubber physics rather than raw knockback.
- Awakening passive — Gear 5 converts your environment into an extension of your body. Ground, walls, and nearby objects become weapons.
- Haki amplification — Armament Haki coatings stack with Gear 5’s rubber properties, creating a hard-rubber hybrid that bypasses standard durability calculations.
- Comedic invincibility — The in-game flavor text describes Gear 5 as “making combat fun again.” Mechanically, it grants a short window of damage immunity during the initial transformation.
The Multiverse Sea patch (Aug 2026) added Gear 5 as a permanent unlock, not a temporary event form. Once unlocked, it replaces your base Gomu Gomu no Mi moveset entirely.
Requirements to Unlock Gear 5
Before you can attempt the Gear 5 quest chain, you must satisfy every condition below:
- Own the Gomu Gomu no Mi — The starter fruit does not count. You must obtain the Gomu Gomu no Mi from a boss raid or the player market. It cannot be rolled from the Logue Town merchant.
- Reach 5,000 total stats — Allocate at least 5,000 across Strength, Defense, and Speed. Spirit is not required for Gear 5.
- Defeat 3 World Bosses — Any three World Boss kills count. The bosses do not need to be on the same day.
- Complete the Marineford Raids quest line — Finish every raid in the Marineford arc, including the Akainu, Kizaru, and Blackbeard encounters.
- Own a Legendary or Mythical accessory — The quest NPC will not speak to you without a Rare-tier or higher accessory equipped.
- Reach level 350 — The Gear 5 unlock NPC only appears after level 350.
The Quest Chain
The Gear 5 quest begins on Foosha Village with a new NPC called “Gomu Gomu no Mi Trader” who appears after level 350. The chain takes approximately 2–3 hours to complete.
Step 1 — Return to Rayleigh
Talk to Rayleigh on Random Wilderness. He tells you that the Gomu Gomu no Mi has “awakened in response to your Haki growth.” This dialogue only triggers if you have Armament Haki unlocked.
If you do not have Armament Haki, visit the Haki unlock guide first.
Step 2 — Gather the Five Scrolls
Rayleigh sends you to collect five scrolls hidden across different seas. Each scroll is held by a mini-boss that spawns once per server reset:
| Scroll | Mini-Boss | Location | Spawn Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stretch Scroll | Garp | Foosha Village dock | Every full hour |
| Bound Scroll | Lucci | Marineford Plaza | Every 2 hours |
| Inflation Scroll | Whitebeard | Whole Cake Island | Every 3 hours |
| Haki Scroll | Rayleigh | Random Wilderness | Every 4 hours |
| Awakening Scroll | Shanks | Red Hair Island | Once per day |
The Shanks encounter on Red Hair Island is the longest fight. He has a 3-minute enrage timer. Bring a Mythical fruit and a full team if possible.
Step 3 — Return to Rayleigh
Hand all five scrolls to Rayleigh. He performs a Haki-infused awakening ritual on your Gomu Gomu no Mi. A 30-second cutscene plays. After the cutscene, your fruit is permanently awakened and Gear 5 is unlocked.
Step 4 — Equip Gear 5
Open your inventory, find the Gomu Gomu no Mi, and click “Awaken.” The Gear 5 moveset replaces your standard Gomu Gomu moves. The transformation is permanent — you cannot revert to the unawakened form.
Gear 5 Moves and Combos
| Move | Key | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Gomu Gomu no Mi: Bajrang Gun | Z | Giant inflated fist. The largest hitbox in the game. Stuns for 2 seconds. |
| Gomu Gomu no Mi: Bajrang: Open | X | Rapid-fire inflation punches. 12-hit combo. Each hit reduces enemy defense by 3%. |
| Gomu Gomu no Mi: Snipe | C | Stretch-to-target snipe. Ignores line-of-sight. Travels through walls. |
| Gomu Gomu no Mi: Awakening Passive | Passive | Converts nearby terrain to rubber. Environmental kills award bonus Beli. |
Recommended combo: Snipe (C) → Bajarang: Open (X) → Bajarang Gun (Z). This opens with range, builds the defense reduction stack, and finishes with the kill shot.
Best Builds for Gear 5
Gear 5 synergizes best with:
- Sword Saint — The rubber-sword hybrid is the top Gear 5 build. Sword attacks apply the Gear 5 rubber property, and the defense reduction from Bajarang: Open stacks with sword damage.
- Death Step — The mobility from Death Step keeps Gear 5 users in rubber-inflation range. The dark-style dash also amplifies the rubber physics.
- Fishman Karate — Water combat amplifies rubber properties. Fishman + Gear 5 is the strongest water PvP combo in the game.
Avoid pairing Gear 5 with slow styles like Rokushiki Tekkai. The rubber physics require constant repositioning that tank styles cannot support.
Gear 5 in PvP
In structured PvP, Gear 5 occupies a unique niche:
- Strengths — The Bajarang Gun has the largest single-target hitbox in the game. It catches dodgers, ignores terrain, and the defense reduction stacks fast.
- Weaknesses — The transformation window (the first 5 seconds of Gear 5 activation) is the only real vulnerability. Burst styles like Accelerator can kill a Gear 5 user before the rubber passive activates.
- Counter-play — Ultra Instinct auto-dodges the Bajarang Gun. Sukuna’s domain counters Gear 5’s rubber physics with slash debuffs.
Common Mistakes
- Using Gear 5 as a starter fruit. Gear 5 requires level 350, 5,000 stats, and Marineford completion. It is an end-game unlock, not a beginner path.
- Skipping the accessory requirement. The quest NPC ignores you without a Legendary accessory. Farm a Mythic accessory from the accessory tier list first.
- Soloing the Shanks encounter. The Red Hair Island boss has a 3-minute enrage timer. Bring a team or use a private server.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Re:AOPG questions.
Can I unlock Gear 5 without a Mythical fruit?
Yes. Gear 5 is unlocked through a quest chain that rewards the awakening directly. You only need the Gomu Gomu no Mi, level 350, 5,000 stats, and Marineford completion. A Mythical fruit helps with the Shanks fight but is not required.
What is the fastest way to get the Gomu Gomu no Mi?
The Gomu Gomu no Mi does not spawn in the world. It drops from the Shanks World Boss on Red Hair Island and trades at approximately 2.5 trade units on the player market. Check the [Devil Fruits tier list](/tier-list/devil-fruits/) for current trade values.
Does Gear 5 work in water?
Yes. Like all Gomu Gomu no Mi forms, Gear 5 is not disabled by water. Fishman players get the full rubber-physics benefit in water combat, making Gear 5 + Fishman the strongest water PvP combo in the game.
How long does the Gear 5 quest chain take?
The quest chain takes 2–3 hours if you know the spawn timers. The Shanks encounter is the longest individual fight (up to 3 minutes with enrage). The other four mini-bosses spawn on predictable timers that you can plan around.
